# ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias de la contaminación del aceite con agua?

Dentro ya sea un motor, un sistema hidráulico, un sistema de engranajes o incluso una turbina de generación de energía, el agua puede actuar como un contaminante del aceite con efectos desde imperceptibles hasta muy severos.
Solemos preocuparnos cuando la contaminación con agua es visible, en forma de turbidez o apariencia lechosa. Sin embargo, el agua suele existir en el aceite en tres estados o fases.
El primer estado, conocido como **agua disuelta**, se caracteriza por moléculas individuales de agua dispersas en el aceite. Un aceite puede contener una concentración significativa de **agua disuelta,** sin indicación visible de su presencia.
La mayoría de los aceites industriales, pueden soportar de 200 a 600 ppm de agua (0,02 a 0,06%) en el estado disuelto dependiendo de la temperatura y longevidad del aceite. Con aceites más viejos capaces de soportar entre tres y cuatro veces más agua en el estado disuelto, que el aceite nuevo.
Una vez que la cantidad de agua ha excedido la concentración máxima para permanecer disuelta, el aceite se satura. En este punto, el agua queda suspendida en el aceite en gotas microscópicas conocidas como una **[emulsión](https://www.selectorcastrol.com.ar/Paginas/home.aspx)**.
La adición de más agua a una mezcla emulsificada de aceite y agua conducirá a la separación de las dos fases, produciendo una capa de agua libre, así como aceite libre o emulsificado. Para aceites minerales y PAOs (polialfaolefinas) cuya gravedad específica es menor de 1.0, esta capa de agua libre se encuentra en el fondo de tanques y sumideros.

## **PROBLEMAS**
Otro de los[problemas](https://ingenierialiquida.castrolargentina.com.ar/castrol/herramientas-de-diagnostico-para-optimizar-su-maquinaria-industrial) que se pueden presentar es la formación de **herrumbre,** que se da sobre las superficies de hierro. Esto provoca que, con el tiempo, ese hierro se desprenda como partículas abrasivas.
Además de la formación de emulsión y **herrumbre** se pueden mencionar otros problemas que ocasiona el agua:
- **Precipitación de aditivos** por el proceso de hidrólisis.
- **Formación de borras** que provocan taponamientos de filtros.
- **Ineficiencia de lubricación**.
- Promoción del **crecimiento microbiológico**.
- Ingreso de partículas que elevan el código ISO de limpieza.
- Contribución a la **corrosión**, principalmente si el agua tiene un **pH ácido** (menor que 7) o muy alcalino (cuando el valor es muy superior a un pH 7).

Si hay presencia de agua en un sistema con alta concentración de ácido (sulfúrico, clorhídrico, acético, fosfórico, etc.) aumentará la concentración de iones \[H+\] provocando ataques corrosivos
De la misma manera, si existe alta concentración de álcalis (soda cáustica, hidróxido de calcio, amoníaco, etc.), aumentará la concentración de \[OH-\], generando también corrosión por ataque alcalino.

## VALORES CONDENATORIOS
Las consecuencias que sufra dependerán del sistema que se esté lubricando. Se sabe que hay sistemas más delicados que otros.
Sin embargo se puede generalizar afirmando que para sistemas hidráulicos, engranajes, compresores y turbinas, los valores máximos serían de: 0,04 % (400 ppm). No obstante se entiende que si el contenido de agua es menor, será mejor para el sistema.
Si se tiene en cuenta un motor de combustión interna, la mayoría de los fabricantes calculan un valor de 0.2 % como máximo. En motores marinos incluso puede llegar hasta 0.3% en motores que operan de forma inteligente.
En los motores, el ingreso de agua puede estar dado por el del líquido refrigerante. Este generalmente es detectado de forma prematura con un análisis metálico, por ICP u otro método, de concentraciones de Sodio y Potasio e incluso Boro según sea la tecnología del refrigerante, ya que son metales que se encuentran en dichos fluidos en forma de aditivos.
En los motores de combustión interna, ya sea que utilicen diésel o nafta, el agua se puede generar por arranques y paradas (viajes de 10 minutos), donde se forma agua por condensación (un régimen ideal de servicio es de 30 minutos como mínimo, por lo menos, ya que permite al motor alcanzar su temperatura ideal de operación durante el tiempo necesario como para que el agua se evapore y salga por el escape).

## **CÓMO DETECTAR EL AGUA EN CAMPO**
Uno de los métodos para detectar la presencia de agua en campo es el comparativo por **turbidez** que se puede ver en la foto de más arriba.
Si se puede observar a trasluz el cuadriculado de una hoja, la cantidad de agua no es muy elevada.
Otro es el craqueo térmico en un tubo de ensayo. En este método se llega a una sensibilidad tal, que se pueden escuchar cantidades de hasta 150 ppm de agua en aceites de baja viscosidad; o la clásica plancha metálica caliente (esto se debe realizar con mucho cuidado y colocando poca cantidad de agua). También hay equipos de campo que pueden ayudar a esta determinación (ver foto). En general la crepitación similar a cuando freímos papas húmedas tiene sensibilidad por encima de las 500 ppm de agua.
En definitiva, existen varios métodos para detectar la presencia de agua en el aceite y evitar las posibles complicaciones.
