# Guía para elegir el mejor lubricante para cada tipo de engranaje

En Castrol, entendemos la importancia de la lubricación adecuada para garantizar un funcionamiento óptimo de los engranajes en entornos industriales diversos. Por eso, hemos creado esta guía que tiene como objetivo proporcionar una visión clara y práctica sobre los criterios esenciales para la selección de los aceites industriales ideales para cada tipo de engranaje y así reducir el uso y consumo de lubricantes.
La selección del lubricante adecuado para cada tipo de engranaje es una tarea crítica que a menudo suele simplificarse en exceso. En consecuencia, muchas veces se termina optando por el lubricante más económico y fácilmente disponible en el mercado sin considerar las necesidades específicas de cada aplicación. Sin embargo, esta elección aparentemente simple puede tener consecuencias negativas que van desde el desgaste prematuro de los componentes hasta fallas desfavorables en los reductores y, en última instancia, costosas rupturas con la consecuente pérdida de tiempo.

## **Consideraciones generales en la selección de lubricantes industriales**
Cuando se trata de seleccionar el lubricante adecuado para engranajes industriales, existen consideraciones generales que constituyen el punto de partida. Estos son algunos de los factores cruciales a considerar para garantizar un rendimiento óptimo en condiciones diversas:
- **Ambientes de lubricación límite:** en situaciones donde la lubricación se encuentra en el límite, es recomendable utilizar lubricantes para engranajes aditivados con aditivos de tercera generación ya que proporcionan una capa adicional de protección en condiciones desafiantes.
- **Cargas de impacto:** para estos casos, los aceites EP (Extrema Presión) para engranajes son la elección adecuada puesto que su formulación fue hecha para resistir cargas extremas y evitar el desgaste prematuro.
- **Superficie rugosa:** cuando los engranajes tienen una superficie más rugosa, es aconsejable utilizar lubricantes con un grado de viscosidad mayor para ayudar a mantener una adecuada película lubricante. Los aditivos de tercera generación, que favorecen el alisamiento de la superficie, son también de gran ayuda.
- **Deslizamiento vs. rodadura:** en aplicaciones que involucran más deslizamiento que rodadura, como los reductores sinfín-corona e hipoidales, se requieren aceites base más viscosos con aditivos especiales para mantener el rendimiento y la protección.
- **Bronce en reductores sinfín-corona:** en este tipo de reductores, lo mejor es evitar el uso de aceites EP pues pueden reaccionar químicamente con el bronce y generar corrosión. Algunos aditivos EP modernos ya superaron este obstáculo pero se tiene que estar seguro de contar con ellos.
- **Reductores con frenos internos:** nunca se deben utilizar aceites EP para engranajes en reductores que cuenten con frenos internos. Esto podría comprometer la seguridad y el funcionamiento del freno.

## **Consideraciones acerca de la temperatura**
Las temperaturas de operación desempeñan un papel crítico en este proceso, siendo fundamental prestar especial atención a las temperaturas máximas y mínimas de funcionamiento.
Los aditivos EP son aliados valiosos cuando se trata de enfrentar condiciones de lubricación límite y cargas de impacto en los engranajes industriales. Estos aditivos brindan una capa adicional de protección que puede ser esencial en entornos desafiantes. Sin embargo, es importante tener en claro que, si bien los aditivos EP son efectivos para mejorar la resistencia a la presión, también pueden tener un efecto sobre la vida útil del aceite.
Estos aditivos pueden acelerar el proceso de oxidación del aceite, lo que a su vez disminuye la temperatura máxima de operación recomendada. Esto significa que, en aplicaciones donde las temperaturas son elevadas, es esencial tener en cuenta este factor y considerar alternativas que mantengan la estabilidad del lubricante a altas temperaturas.
Cuando las temperaturas superan los 77°C, los aditivos EP entran en acción en los puntos de contacto de los engranajes. En estas condiciones, es crucial considerar el uso de lubricantes sintéticos para garantizar un rendimiento óptimo. Estos lubricantes están formulados para mantener su integridad y propiedades de protección, incluso en entornos de alta temperatura, lo que los convierte en una elección confiable para aplicaciones que operan en condiciones térmicas extremas.

## **Consideraciones acerca de la velocidad Y LA CARGA RESPECTO DE LA VISCOSIDAD**
Si graficamos el coeficiente de fricción versus (viscosidad x velocidad) / carga, podemos ver claramente su variación e identificar cada uno de los diferentes regímenes de lubricación y su impacto en el tipo de lubricante a seleccionar. A mayor coeficiente de fricción, obviamente, es esperable mayor desgaste.

### REGÍMENES DE LUBRICACIÓN
En la búsqueda del lubricante ideal para engranajes industriales, es esencial comprender cómo la velocidad de operación y la carga impactan en la selección. Estas son las consideraciones clave a tener en cuenta en función de la velocidad y la carga de operación:
- **Alta velocidad y baja carga:** lubricación hidrodinámica o elastohidrodinámica.
En engranajes de alta velocidad, las superficies se separan por una película de aceite completa, conocida como lubricación hidrodinámica. Esta película de aceite proporciona una protección efectiva contra el desgaste y es fundamental para mantener el funcionamiento óptimo de los engranajes en condiciones de alta velocidad. En estas condiciones se utiliza un aceite de baja viscosidad.
- **Velocidad media y carga media a elevada:** lubricación mixta.
Cuando se trata de engranajes que giran a velocidades moderadas, pero soportan cargas moderadas a elevadas, la velocidad a la que se acercan las superficies es insuficiente para permitir la formación de una película fluida. En estas condiciones, prevalece la lubricación mixta, lo que significa que se necesita el uso de aditivos de extrema presión o de tercera generación (que promueven la deformación plástica a nivel microscópico, como MFT-Microflux Trans, aumentando sensiblemente el área real de contacto) para evitar el desgaste.
- **Baja velocidad y carga elevada:** lubricación límite con movimiento deslizante.
En aplicaciones de baja velocidad y alta carga, como en los engranajes típicos presentes en ingenios azucareros, la viscosidad del aceite necesaria para la formación de la película lubricante deberá ser alta para compensar la baja velocidad del aceite para fluir hacia la zona de carga. Esto resulta en la dominación de las condiciones de lubricación límite, donde el desgaste puede ser severo.
